A premium furnace is built for long service, but it has several high-wear parts and safety-critical components. Common failures include hot surface igniters, inducer motors, control boards, flame sensors, and blower motors.
Repair usually makes sense for most of the furnace's life because many parts are replaceable and costs are often under the threshold compared with full installed replacement. If the heat exchanger is sound and combustion is safe, replacing an igniter or inducer can be a strong value.
Replacement becomes the better choice when the heat exchanger is cracked, the furnace has repeated lockouts, or multiple major components fail close together-especially late in life. Comfort and safety matter: if the system is unreliable during cold weather or carbon monoxide risk is suspected, replacement should take priority regardless of the threshold.
Also consider efficiency gains and whether a newer system would reduce operating costs enough to justify earlier replacement.
